Simple Joys: Why My Parents Loved A Gelang Patah Day Trip

Sometimes the best travel memories aren't found in bustling city centers, but in the quiet corners of a town like Gelang Patah . So I decided to ask my parents along to cross the causeway for a change of pace. We traded the usual shopping malls for authentic flavors and a slower rhythm of life. If you’re looking for a day trip that centers around local food and even better company, here's how we spent our day. Weathered vintage shophouses brimming with nostalgic charm and timeless character HOW TO GET THERE I have a confession to make: despite living in the West for 30 years, I only just realized how incredibly convenient to cross the border via the Tuas Checkpoint! Although I have been through the custom there via coach while on short trip. But not when I travel on my own! Living close to the Tuas Checkpoint makes the journey a breeze. We are 8 stops away from home to Tuas Link MRT station (opened since June 2017), hopped on the CW7 cross-border bus, and before we knew it, we ...

Food Review | New Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh

Hi... I'm back for another week with my food trail at Jalan Kayu. Came for the Bak Kut Teh and instead of having what they are famous for, we ordered Pig Liver Soup and Ginger Sesame Chicken as our main. Weirdos.

Anyway, a decent meal that anyone deserves on a Fri night.

Their Pig Liver Soup ($6) was flavourful with the pig liver not overly cooked. U can tell when it has that harden texture. Here, it tastes just right. A decent claypot of soup served hot but nothing to shout about.

As for the Ginger Sesame Chicken ($6), very bony chicken with rough texture. The braising however was not totally overwhelmed by the ginger. In fact, light ginger taste. Decent but I won't go for it again.

Other sides like Kai Lan ($6) and Braised Egg ($0.70) for 1 whole egg cut into half) were good esp the braised sauce from the latter which opens up your appetite. Never did we waste the sauce to mix with our rice. Also try their Honey Lemon Jelly drink ($2.20) that is refreshing.

They are at: 257 Jalan Kayu, Singapore 799485

No GST or Service Charge. Tipping is appreciated.
