First trip out of the country (actually just crossing the border only) for 2023 though is just somewhere nearer and convenient. JB HERE WE COME AGAIN! For the shopping, for the food, for the different experience and knowledge each time we are there. Forget about diet! Forget about work! Just enjoy the day with family and friends!
My bestie and I have planned in advance this time on what we wanna try and that will be ORIENTAL KOPI! Yes! Wanna see if it is an OVERRATED or WORTHY place to sacrifice our calories.
1. ORIENTAL KOPI
Finally after various attempts at different times with friends just to get a seat for their food, we made it! Effort paid off for getting in as early before 10am to the outlet at Mid Valley Southkey.
Told my bestie to forget about diet for a day since we have the rare chance to get in here for breakfast. And so we ordered this spread. For the 2 of us. Yes I'm not joking. We wiped it off.
ORIENTAL BOLO BUN
Butter and condensed milk served on the side. The entire outlook of the Bolo Bun passed. Surprisingly, it wasn't sweet and with crusty top. Bestie said the butter was good and taste better w drizzles of condensed milk over it. Thou I haven't been to Hong Kong for a long time, but it just taste different.
ORIENTAL EGG TARTS
The looks of Portuguese Egg tart with real thick egg custard on the inside and it wasn't sweet. Bestie commented that the crispiness on the outside taste like Tiong Bahru Bakery croissants. Crispy and flaky. And their tarts appeared in The Malaysia Book of Records for Thickest Egg Tart. Okay this one, no doubt.
CURRY DOUBLE LAVA EGG TOAST
The eggs were jiggling from side to side. So perfectly cooked. Mediocre taste but the curry was the saviour. The toast was thick, crisp and good for dipping with the curry. And not forgetting that curry was thick, fragrance and spicy.
CURRY FISHBALL
On contrary to the curry from the toast, this one here was kind of diluted. Bestie proved it with the drip test. And yes it really was although I find it okay. Served with small fishballs of 10 pieces, makes us miss those Hong Kong street food.
ORIENTAL SIGNATURE MEE SIAM
Bestie had this as the main and find that the mee siam can be a little more moist for her liking. Just like any dry mee siam, you get morsel of tau pok in it. The big fried drumstick that comes with it had the lemongrass taste, not too overpowering and blends with other seasoning.
FRIED CHICKEN MEAT KAMPUNG MEEHOON 👍
I found love with white beehoon (or meehoon) and everytime if there is an option for that other than normal beehoon (the dark one), I will go for the former. Loved the lightly flavoured and moist beehoon but not really for the chicken meat. It tasted normal though crispy but near dry.
And I ordered a Oriental Hot Mocha. It didn't have that Mocha taste I was looking for. Yes when served, it looks like a perfect cup with the foam on top but it is just another normal coffee. Not Mocha.
VERDICT: If there isn't queue, you can try their food. If there is, probably next time.
2. DONA BAKEHOUSE
Spotted this place when accompanying Bestie to buy banana cakes from Hiap Joo Bakery, which is just side by side to it. Very English looking café from the outside, colour theme like those colonial houses we seen in Singapore. There is a sign outside that stated 3 different timings for fresh bakes. So Hiap Joo right?
The moment we entered, I'm so in love with the interiors. Sleek, chic and bright, with side tables for 1 to 2 pax and facing the walkway, people watching. Like those cafes in Paris, sitting there watching the world go by. Fly me to Paris right now!
The variety of pastries can be seen at one glance. Not a lot in my opinion but good enough for you to enjoy over a coffee.
And not forgetting that high ceiling, bringing the natural brightness to the cafe. Lovely. And seating area at 2nd level too.
I had Kombucha (The Pink Portion) that is so refreshing after our shopping spree and so is the Mocktail that Bestie had ordered called Endless Summer. And the Truffle Parmesan Fries that doesn't taste any truffle, just normal fries drizzled with salt. A little disappointing.
VERDICT: Probably try their pastries the next time we are here, to give a more precise review since we just dropped by for drinks and fries.
You can watch the Vlog on my Channel now. My first attempt to document down a little bits of my day trip (minus the shopping part). Enjoy the view of JB in my vlog! CHEERS!
