Visit to Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre | Food Review

Am very happy to be exploring new places with my bestie and this time round, a new hawker centre in the North, Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre. This year on, I shall try to meet friends at places like this than restaurants or cafes, lessening the frequency because of the increase of GST. Probably some will think that is just very minimal money but if you accumulate and save them up, it can be quite a sum that can tide you through a week or two (if you set a decent budget per meal like $5 per meal maybe).

Anyway, I have seen this place from construction to the finished look while on the train. Was intrigued by the outlook because of its greenery. Like a forest or jungle. Talk about sustainability. Pass this round. Those who live opposite really earn it because you have lots of food choices plus near MRT station. Talk about the value of your flat if you intend or not to sell. I will stay.

There are wheelchair seating and baby chairs available which is very thoughtful, making it a friendly and inclusive hawker centre. Also tray-return stations at every corner for us to return trays conveniently.

They created an app under the name, Food Canopy for you to order, make payment and collect your orders with the notifications on the app. Never use because very limited stalls though kind of convenient than waiting at one stall to another.

Anyway, let's do a taste test of food here at Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre. We tried 4 different stalls with me and my bestie's honest review.

1. JIA LE YONG TAU FOO šŸ‘

This stall has different sets and I find it interesting because I can have them without any carbs (rice or noodles). But decided to try their MEE POK LIVER YONG TAU FOO SET $6.00 because I can't be starving my bestie without carbs. So we shared.

From the looks of it, very basic bowl of Dry Yong Tau Foo with a soup. But we both agreed that the Mee Pok was cooked to the right springy texture and of course it tasted good after mixing with their chilli and sweet sauce. The liver was soft with every bite. And the soup was tasty and sweet too. Will come back again for other Yong Tau Foo sets.

2. PAKCIK KAMPUNG (HALAL)

I was first lured by their satays and especially Satay Cup. Fancy eating satays from a cup, that's my very first. So I ordered 5 sticks of Chicken and Mutton each plus Ketupat, total cost $10.50. There are others like Mee Soto, Nasi Lemak and so on in their menu. To me, reasonably priced.

When you tried this Satay Cup, be prepared to get a little messy because satay, peanut sauce, ketupat and onions all in one paper cup. Imagine having satay on the go. But some might like it on the plate because you can choose to dip or not the peanut sauce. Overall, we both favoured their Chicken Satay because of the tenderness and well-marinated meat. Plus the charred on the side. On the other hand, the Mutton Satay wasn't too bad but it has that little bit of stench and kind of dense.

3. STFU ~ SNACK THAT FOOD UP

Trying out Mexican food in a hawker centre was our first again. Shouldn't be surprised though because now you can find different cuisines at hawker centre other than usual. Here they have Tortilla, Taco, Quesadilla and so on but I chose their BBQ Chicken Taco $7.50. Because I wanna have some crispy Taco. Oh not forgetting, they have Naan here. A mix of Mexican and Indian food. What a unique combi!

Served with nachos and salsa sauce, indeed I love their crispy Tacos with BBQ Chicken within. The tender chicken meat was mixed with some cheese, sauce and vegetables, making it savoury without feeling jelak. And the salsa sauce was sour at first but spiciness came from behind when we were dipping nachos. Overall taste was quite balanced and I think it made quite a good appetizer to me.

4. LIXIN TEOCHEW FISHBALL NOODLES šŸ‘

My bestie and I are fishball lovers so when I told her that I'm gonna buy a bowl of fishball soup, all hands up for it. Luckily she is okay with less carbs. Thank God! Wonder if she will be hungry when she gets home. Hehehe...

A bowl of 10 fishballs for $6.50 and good enough to share between us. Their fishballs wasn't made to the bouncy type and not the usual smooth appearance but taste wasn't bad. Sort of bigger than some other stalls. It could be handmade. And the soup was very tasty and fragrance and you could find lard in the soup. That explains the little layer of oil from the soup.

5. SCISSORS PAPER STONE

Ended our food trail with beer. It has been a very long time since I drank with my bestie. So found this stall which has a very unqiue name (some drinking games we play) that sells beer and some other drinks like Soya, Sugarcane and so on. There are only 3 types of beer available: Kronenbourg Blanc 1664, Asahi Super Dry and Asahi Black. Selling in pint $9, jug $20 and tower $48. Of course we got ourselves 1664. It was quite a smooth beer. Wasn't too dry. I like it.

There are more stalls to conquer but meanwhile, present to you peeps the above for a start. Really save a lot than in restaurants or cafes and you get to try different cuisines at one go. Average $24 per pax including beer. Why not right? So go explore this new place with your family and friends. Cheers!
