Cafe-hopping at Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk | Post-Covid Travel

I guess soon all the cafes here will be explored and featured in my blog every time I go with friends. And will always make sure to hop 2 places before heading elsewhere. That's even faster. Really had so much fun exploring 陳旭年街 Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk (THNHW in short). If you haven't know, Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk is a popular tourist spot where you can find lots of cafes, small eateries and even bakeries. Early morning, the F&Bs outlets will be packed with local patrons and tourists too (especially Singaporeans) because is near to the Custom by walking from City Square. I would say this is more of a dining spot than anything else. because you can walk around the streets and alleys to see picturesque shophouses.

Here are some of the new additions to my 'cafe collection list' at Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk.

👌OFFEE CAFE
30, Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Malaysia

I loved this 2-storey cafe because of its open concept, natural lightings from the outside for better photo taking and save energy too (talking about sustainability). Good ambience and vibes. Their menu was quite simple with drinks like Latte, Mocha and so on, pastries and desserts, and breakfast platter which wasn't available when we went there. Sat on the 2nd floor, we could watch the baristas making coffees from the top.

Ordered Oat Milk Chocolate and Oat Milk Latte along with Berries Tiramisu and Pain Au Chocolat for breakfast since choices were limited. The Milk Chocolate was good and well-balanced in taste. Pain Au Chocolat was flaky with every bite and having it could be a messy affair. Also the Berries Tiramisu was sweet but lacked the Tiramisu taste which probably overwhelmed by the sweet berries sauce. Too moist and not very spongy like standard Tiramisu, in my opinion. And I haven't given up the idea of trying their breakfast platter. I actually love breakfast platter where you get all the different nutrients in one plate: greens, proteins, fats and fiber. Probably next time I can do up a blog on breakfast platters.

👌THE REPLACEMENT - LODGE & KITCHEN
33, Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Just down the same stretch as Offee is another cafe, The Replacement - Lodge & Kitchen. The picturesque and quaint outlook made me feel so nostalgic and I loved the fact they preserved such shophouses because histories should never be forgotten and that it shouldn't be overly replaced by modern world thingy.

Stepping in the cafe, you would be greeted by smiling staff who would usher you to the available seats. A communal place where patrons hanging out to connect with one another. It felt warm and intimate because the fact that we could go back to living the pre-covid days but that didn't mean the pandemic is over. Chic-looking interior with nice looking mosaic tiles, long and bright walkway into the premise.

Hot Hazelnut Latte RM13 and Cold Latte RM17

I would say that I'm someone who preferred flavoured Latte and especially Hazelnut. I didn't like it too bitter nor creamy. Striking a balance in between would be perfect and also basic latte art. When there isn't any, I would minus points. My friend had their Cold Latte with a change to oat milk for just a top of RM4. She complimented on the taste of aromatic coffee and the oat milk. 👍

Salmon Florentine RM38.90

Actually wanted to have their Breakfast Platter but decided on Salmon Florentine because it has been a long time since I have salmon a.k.a my Omega 3 intake. Pan searing of salmon gave a nice crisps on the skin and the salmon meat wasn't dry but retaining the moist. The sautéed mushrooms was so good! I love it.  I used some of their buttery cream that was served with the food as dip for the toast.

Hazelnut Nutella Churros RM16.90

When there is Churros (Ang Moh Dough Fritter version) in the menu, a must order for me because I love crispy Churros on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. The Churros itself weren't sweet and were lightly dusted with powdered sugar, along with the chocolate dip. It was an enjoyment having the Churros.

Hope you enjoyed the post as all these visits were very recent and most importantly, post-covid period (not over yet the pandemic but just get on with our daily life, right?) travel. 民以食为天 so enjoy eating! Shall continue with the café-hopping next year because given that lots of people will be heading in during school holidays. I really have zero tolerance with custom queuing, let alone driving in a.k.a car queuing. I just hate queuing!
