Lunch Diaries: Enjoying a Flavourful Mid-day Break with Me

Need an update on the eats at Raffles Place/CBD Area since the last one I did. I think the following shops are quite familiar to those working in this area so bear with me as I explore the old and the new ones for everyone.

Start with this shop where many colleagues went for some nice and warm soup. I personally tried their ABC (get that sweetness taste) and Lotus Root Peanut Soup (tasty). That is long hours of simmering to achieve the taste level without feeling thirsty. And the pork ribs in the soup was tender. There are at least 5 different soup to choose from so just take a little time to see what you crave for. No wonder many patrons go there for lunch. And I usually don't go with rice but you have a choice to get their Yam rice and some sides to complement your meal.

My current favourite of all salad shops I went in the CBD. The key is you can choose up to 2 bases which I always get soba and lettuce. Guess what? They have smoked duck for protein and wakame for side! Yeah! Yummy. I also love their Curried Cauliflower. Very satisfying after every lunch. I think I patronize their shop more than any others. Oh I don't do dressings because the sides and protein are flavourful enough to make up for the plain lettuce and soba. Learn this from me ya.

I must say I love their Smoked Duck Aglio Olio just because of their Smoked Duck. Apart from the savoury taste, it has this hint of sweetness. And the pasta has a little wok-hey and garlicky taste too. Please choose the right amount of spiciness that you can tolerate. I had too much but the aftertaste was good. Oh my colleague HIGHLY RECOMMEND their Mushroom Soup which I didn't tried because the pasta was enough to trigger the food coma later the afternoon.

88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist

Singapore 049561
Nearest MRT: Telok Ayer (Downtown Line)

Had lunch with my colleagues when they were newly opened and long queue expected because new kid on the block. The founder was there too and I saw the food blogger, Johorkaki there too. Ordered a 1 pax platter that has duck meat, roasted meat and char siew. My husband and I's favourite will be the roasted meat (I bought a take-out for him). Crispy skin, and the meat and fats ratio was just right. Not so much for the Char Siew though it has a little crisp on the side. Also ordered a Wantan Soup to warm myself. There are lard in it too, no wonder the tastiness. Not forgetting their well-cooked Lava Eggs. The chilli sauce was good, taste like those of chicken rice, adding a punch to it.

AL MARCHE
9 Raffles Place, B1-02
Republic Plaza, Singapore 048619
Nearest MRT: Raffles Place

Tried once during their new opening and it was priced at $9.90. Now at $10+, I find it quite a standard pricing at CBD area. This time I chose fish as my protein since there isn't any additional cost. It was well-seasoned and tasted just right plus fresh. They also sell sandwiches so do try it and let me know if it is good.

Biang Biang Noodles Xi An Famous Food

Always long queue during lunch time for their Biang Biang noodles. Had lunch with my boss and colleague one day and they (as Chinese nationals) know what are the must-order food here. You can order a set that comes with the main, a side and a drink, which can fill one up for a food coma later. Tried their Liang Fen with lots of Yellow Beansprouts that was fat ones than the normal green ones. The cucumber and white radish sides were well marinated with a crunch. I think the best will be their Biang Biang Noodles. Flat and fat noodles that was so long that you have to cut it half way or pull it for you. Remember to mix well with the braised cubes to get the overall taste. Oh and their Rou Jia Mo a.k.a Chinese Hamburger or Meat in a bun was not bad too. I still prefer the fillings to be flavourful so that it balances out the plain jane yet fluffy bun.

I don't actually like the idea of half protein when the price is about the same as other salad shops where they give protein as a whole. To me, every salad shops are the same but what they offer for sides and proteins, plus the freshness of their food is key to my decision on which shop I go. Luckily they have wakame so forgiven on this HALF PROTEIN thingy.

San Pin Pao Fan (三品泡饭)
51 Telok Ayer Street #01-18

Nearest MRT: Telok Ayer (Downtown Line)

My 1st Pao Fan I ever tried was from San Pin Pao Fan. Loved their Yuan Yang Pao Fan as I can have both types of fish (fried and sliced) in one bowl. I won't say is savoury but it suits my taste bud and not too filling for lunch to prevent food coma. Best to have it on rainy days where you can't go far for lunch, unless you are fine with carrying a brolly with you.

Instead of the usual Fish Soup Paradise, this is an alternative of fish soup lovers. It is slightly cheaper than Fish Soup Paradise and the broth wasn't too bad with that fresh and sweet taste. Anyway, for you to judge if the taste is good enough for you. I had their Fried Fish Soup with white thick noodles and milk. Cost a total of $9.10 (take-out)
