The Secret to Perfect Homecooked Fried Rice + My Husband's Childhood Recipes

If there is one ultimate comfort food that instantly feels like home, it has to be a steaming plate of fried rice. But if you ask three different people how they cook it, you’ll probably get three completely different answers! In our household, fried rice isn't just a quick way to clear out the fridge, it's a trip down memory lane. Recently, my husband took over the wok to recreate two nostalgic fried rice recipes he grew up eating as a youngster, alongside our go-to classic version. Watching him cook reminded me that the best meals don’t require fancy ingredients; they just require a few time-tested techniques. Whether you're craving a rich, glossy Kicap Manis version or a classic shrimp stir-fry, here are the absolute must-do steps and golden rules from our kitchen to yours to ensure your fried rice turns out perfectly separate, fluffy, and packed with flavor every single time! 3 Different Recipes, 3 Different Colours of Fried Rice Master Tip #1: The Fried Rice Foundation...

Bistro Hopping | Orto Park at Yishun

Happy that our friend came down to Yishun for once to bistro-hop since he has been asking for many weekends. Husband chose ORTO Park because already knew there were bistros here since our last visit. Cool right so near our house.

The nearest MRT to ORTO Park will be Khatib, right opposite Yishun stadium. Walking distance (probably about 10-15mins) or you can take a bus from the bus-stop opposite Khatib MRT which is just 1 stop away only.

Used to be called Bottle Tree Park, this place has activities for young and old. From trampoline to prawning. Find out more from the link here.

Here we are finally. The weather looks like it was gonna rain so we chose a table under the tentage. It wasn't windy but freaking hot. Got the server to turn their big fan to our direction. By the way probably they were under-staff and found that they have some attitude problem. Have to wave or whistle in order to get their attention. Never mind that because after this place, we hopped to another bistro.

In their menu, there were many local food to choose from but because we came for a drink, finger food was more in place for us. Luncheon fries for sure, and a plate of Fried Chicken Wings with Waffle Fries. I finally had a better version of luncheon fries here. By the way, the towers selection quite limited and mostly German beers.

As I look around, big groups like family with kids can be seen at many tables and I certainly think this is one good family-friendly (or kids-friendly) place. You can't smoke here and have to go out to another side of the park (designated smoking area).

If you are football fan, this is the place for you. Enjoy the matches on the wide screen in the open, along with drinks and food. And emotion surged when there is a goal or a BOO for a missed. Haha... Also the guys finally got to smoke on the table at their comfort. Ordered a tower and a jug of beer, a plate of calamari ring and herb crusted salmon. It felt much better than the other one next dooe. Cooler and breezy (even though is also outdoor) and service was better. And wider selection of towers. At least got Carlsberg.

One look at this place, you get to see couples hanging out and even school mates meet-up (because I saw them looking at their school yearbook). Low light ambience is love because all you want is to relax for the night and talk anything under the moon (because it was night time) with your friends, or even family.

Looking forward to the next round of bistro-hopping. Alcohol, food and company. That is what you need after a tiring day at work.
