Stella's Recommendation | Food and Cooking Essentials

I seldom do recommendations of my own because everyone has different expectations on things and especially food. But after having/using the following for multiples, I decided to share with you peeps on what Mister and I love to use for our cooking at home which includes instant noodles too. I just love noodles.

I remember many years ago, I did a post on Kitchen Staples (click here) and wrote on the must-have in the kitchen. Other than a change of airfryer to a different brand, nothing has changed so far. And then another post on Household products worth having (click here). Oh I actually did recommend stuff to you peeps. Okay... I wrote many posts, lame or useful so can't remember all of them till I go find it.

A brief summary of the items that will appear here and we can start the post rolling:
  1. Seah's Spices - Stewed Fragrant Spices
  2. Fish Soup Paradise - Signature Batang/Tom Yum/Prawn Broth (the birth of Hokkien Png)
  3. Pancit Canton
  4. Sam Yang - Potato Ramen and Nong Shim - Budae Jjigae Ramyun
  5. Prima Taste - Premium Non-Fried Noodle (La Mian)
1. Stella recommends: Seah's Spices - Stewed Fragrant Spices

Was introduced to this brand by my ex-colleague who recommended me their Bak Kut Teh spice pack. Subsequently, I tried their other products that were not bad too.

Why do I recommend this when you can simply use Five Spices powder, Rock Sugar and Dark Soy Sauce to do it? Let me explain.

If you are that sort who seldom cook, this will help you lessen the chances of hoarding those sauces, powders and so on till it expires. Stop food wastage. The mix pack has it all except Dark Soy Sauce and garlic of course. Throw them all into a pot of water with the ingredients and done!

And this pot can last for at least 2 meals (for couples like us). So if you have no time to cook, the balanced can keep for the next day. This time just add some water and ingredients. Time saver and nothing goes to waste. You can use it to cook rice or noodles too. 👍👍

2. Stella recommends: Fish Soup Paradise - Signature Batang / Tom Yum / Prawn Broth

Support local businesses. I give the same reason for using the broths, for convenient. Not that I don't do broths at home which I mainly do pork bone broth and chicken broth. Sometimes, you just feel so lazy and all these broths come in handy.

Cooked a one pot meal for dinner. Mister loved the Signature Batang Fish broth the very first time and almost finished the soup on his own. We cooked Yong Tau Foo with the broth. Probably because with the ingredients in it that brought it to the next level of sweetness. 👍👍👍

This 2nd time when I added spinach, the taste kind of changed and he said it wasn't as good though it just tasted a little spinach-gy (is that such word even?). Also in the soup were 12 frozen vegan dumplings, 10 fishballs and 2 tau kwa (cut into 8 cubes each).

Using their Tom Yum Broth for an unconventional pot made up of whatever ingredients I have in the kitchen. Made fishballs w 260g batang fish fillet bought at reduced price, threw the balanced scallops (that shrink till pathetically small), Chinese mushrooms and a handful of frozen prawns.

The broth was spicy and sweet and I didn't get the lemongrass taste. But I liked such version too. 👍👍👍 I wished that I could add udon into it because Tom Yum Soup + Udon = Excellent in my opinion because I made and tried it before. Too bad, I'm on Keto Diet.

Another version under my Clear the Fridge mission where I used up all the ingredients from previous day including all the vegetables (bok choy and spinach). Mister finds that 500ml is not enough because of the amount of ingredients I put but actual fact, just nice without anything left. No wastage.

Cooked our own Prawn Noodles Soup with their Prawn Broth. Mister said the broth has the prawn taste but somehow lacked a little flavouring. So he added a little condiments and ended up with an enhanced flavourful soup.

Guess what we do with the leftover soup? We uses it to create our own Hokkien Png. Always Hokkien Mee not sian meh? Do like the Mee style (ours almost there) but Rice instead. If you have lard, maybe u can try frying it then put them in. Let me know if it is nice.

Ingredients:
  • Leftover broth
  • 1 cup of rice, soaked
  • Fishcakes, sliced
  • Frozen prawns
  • Roasted meat, sliced
  • Fried shallots
Throw them all into the ricecooker to cook.

And ta-da... it smells and tastes so good like Hokkien Mee. If add some chilli, even more like the Mee version.

✅ Top pick remains their Signature Batang Fish Broth.

3. 👌Stella Recommends: Pancit Canton

I have always wanted to try because I simply love noodles. And after watching food variety show on Filipino cuisine, I knew it was a must-buy and so grab a pack at NTUC Fairprice.

Boiled them at high heat and it got cooked real fast. Run under cold water before throwing in to cook up a storm.

Simply seasoning with dark sauce and light soy sauce. Cook with beansprouts and done. Simple as ABC. Mister commented that it looks like I have just fry yellow noodles. 😁 I just love the texture like it was for claypot yee mee but the pancit canton is thicker. 👍

Recently, Mister sent me a cooking video and I followed the recipe of the sauce (modified a little) and since then, I'm stuck with that sauce recipe. Because it was perfect for noodles and beehoon. We both love it and say bye bye to inconsistent taste. I have even made a bottle to fridge so that I can bring out to use on my next cooking.

Our modified recipe: 2 tbsp oyster sauce, 2 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil, some salt and pepper.

4. Stella Recommends: Potato Ramen and Budae Jjigae Ramyun

These 2 instant noodles are well-loved by Mister. Any sponsorships from these 2 brands are welcomed. Mister will be the best spokesperson for these 2 Korean brands. Haha... please write in to me now!

👌 Potato Ramen

This is how Mister cooked for his supper with 2 packs of ramen, luncheon meats, eggs, spring onions and so on. Superb local than Korean style. The soup base was kind of spicy but it was shiok! The noodles texture was good and doesn't get soggy easily. Everyone should eat like how Mister do. 😄

Budae Jjigae Ramyun

No difference with Potato Ramen that has a little spiciness and some tiny luncheon meat (in my opinion). Mister added extra noodles to it so you will see a mix. Literally good. 👍

5. Stella Recommends: 👌Premium Non-Fried Noodle - La Mian

Mister approved of this noodles because of its thickness and QQ texture. It works perfectly both dry or soup version of noodles like stir-fried noodles or laksa too. We even used it to cook in a pot of braised sauce (the No. 1 in my recommendation) and the absorption of the goodness was good and succulent.

You can also watch the video which Mister used this noodles to cook Taiwanese style 油面.

By now you must be wondering why so many noodles? As a noodle lover, why not? So many different types out there to try. I just can't resist.

If you enjoy our above recommendations, do let us know in the comment section what else do you wanna see and we can consider to do another Stella's Recommendation. Cheers.
