Feast Your Palate at Jurong East Ave 1
Once a Westie, always a Westie (not Swiftie ya). Living in the West for 30 years and have seen how this place developed from ground zero till now, surrounded by condominiums, a marketplace, sports facilities, and so on. Being a self-proclaimed foodie, I feel so guilty for not doing any food reviews although there are many online posts on the Yuhua Market and Hawker Centre, and also the nearby coffeeshops. Imagine I have done quite a few posts for my 2nd home in the North (actually by right the 3rd because Tiong Bahru was my 1st to begin with). Well... never too late to make up for it now, right? Let's start!
Outlook before 15 Apr 2024 Closure for R&R Works |
LAI HENG HANDMADE TEOCHEW KUEH
347 YUHUA MARKET AND HAWKER CENTRE #01-218

Pan-Fried Png Kueh / Soon Kueh |
The queue was no joke but I'm fine with that because they handmade all the food on the spot and that means freshly steamed at their stall too (no doubt) or you can get pan-fried ones too. Dipped with dark soy sauce and chili, one word: Shiok! Have it while it's hot. Generous fillings and the soon kueh skin texture were just right. I would suggest you try each of them on the menu at one go if it is your first time having it (my own way thou). Apparently my dad finds it too thin the skin and tears apart easily. Different preference as you can see.
GUANG TAI LOR MEE
347 YUHUA MARKET AND HAWKER CENTRE #01-189
The stall that sells only Lor Mee |
Decent bowl of Lor Mee at $4 |
I had a decent bowl of Lor Mee for breakfast before returning to my folks' home. This stall is selling just Lor Mee at a pocket-friendly price of SGD4. The gravy was thick but not too jelak and had a hint of herbal taste, along with the standard ingredients like slices of tender pork belly, small pieces of Ngoh Xiang, and half a dense braised egg.
So it has been 3 months since the hawker centre closed for Repairs and Redecoration (R&R) Work (15 Apr - 14 Jul 2024). I'm expecting price increase for some stalls (just like the stalls at Hong Lim after such works). What's so surprising, right?
KAI XIANG EATERY (ZI CHAR)
BLOCK 349 JURONG EAST AVE 1 #01-1215
This Zi Char stall in the coffeeshop has been there for the longest time since my younger days and if I remember correctly, it has changed owner for a few times (I mean the entire coffeeshop). Some times, we had dinner there on birthdays and other times, we bought take-outs to eat at the comfort of my parents.
Hokkien Mee SGD4.50 |
They cook this in KL Hokkien Mee style and we love it so much since young. My dad once awhile will buy take-outs home and usually one of them will be Hokkien Mee. So the impression of this dish stays. Consider affordable price for a small size but I think as time goes by, it will go up to SGD6 too (that's based on some other stalls I had before).
Prawn Rolls SGD8 |
Although it was kind of expensive (standard price to be honest) but their Prawn Rolls were good indeed. Not oily, crispy skin and meaty crunchy fillings. Must have whenever we dine in or take-outs.
RICHIE'S CRISPY PUFF
BLOCK 349 JURONG EAST AVE 1
Seldom did we buy their curry puffs but more of their big fishballs. My folks will buy a few sticks whenever I come back for lunch on weekends. I will buy back home too because husband likes it too. Their wu xiang also can try but seldom have the chance to grab it. Their puffs are handmade at the back of the kitchen so is hot piping and fresh!
Richie's Crispy Puff at Jurong East Ave 1 |
They sell curry puffs, fishballs and sometimes, wu xiang |
I think because since young, most of our meals are homecooked by my mum (though nothing fantastic) and so seldom do we dine out, unless take-outs for breakfast or on occasions like birthdays or Mother's/Father's Day. I remember when we were young, there used to be stalls at coffeeshop and hawker centre where my mum would at times get Pig's Organ Soup or Wantan Mee as add-ons for our dinner. Now all gone and replaced with supermarket and some others respectively. This is a vibrant market with lots of shops and food to look forward to. So I enjoy walking around whenever I go back for a visit. I will update in this post as and when I come across new stalls that I try. Stay tune!
