The Secret to Perfect Homecooked Fried Rice + My Husband's Childhood Recipes

If there is one ultimate comfort food that instantly feels like home, it has to be a steaming plate of fried rice. But if you ask three different people how they cook it, you’ll probably get three completely different answers! In our household, fried rice isn't just a quick way to clear out the fridge, it's a trip down memory lane. Recently, my husband took over the wok to recreate two nostalgic fried rice recipes he grew up eating as a youngster, alongside our go-to classic version. Watching him cook reminded me that the best meals don’t require fancy ingredients; they just require a few time-tested techniques. Whether you're craving a rich, glossy Kicap Manis version or a classic shrimp stir-fry, here are the absolute must-do steps and golden rules from our kitchen to yours to ensure your fried rice turns out perfectly separate, fluffy, and packed with flavor every single time! 3 Different Recipes, 3 Different Colours of Fried Rice Master Tip #1: The Fried Rice Foundation...

FUFU Pot | Food Review

Aesthetic Feel in the Middle of a Hotpot Restaurant

Finally met up with my ladies even though not at full strength (again). Searching for a place for this gathering and to be fair, shall find somewhere centralized. Plaza Singapura is good enough (at least for me... lol). Happen to come across FuFu Pot (I love steamboat/hotpot btw) and settled for it straight with reservation (without much consultation from the ladies). I saw that they have Stinky Tofu Pot but not all my friends appreciate that. Anyway, let me share what we had for the night.

KOREAN ARMY STEW $19

Korean Army Stew (Budae Jjigae)

Was looking forward to a good Army Stew, only to get disappointed thereafter. A little spicy taste but lacked flavour. My friend even said that she can do a better Army Stew at home. You are talking with a home chef and food critic here. Need to up the standard.

TONKOTSU MISO $23

Tonkotsu Miso👍

I think of all the different hotpots we ordered, Tonkotsu Miso Pot 👍has passed my taste test (at least). A little creamy and flavourful but not lip-smacking enough. There were meatballs, pork belly slices, seafood, and ramen. I personally will rename it to Seafood Tonkotsu Miso Ramen.

SPICY TOMATO $25 THAT WASN'T SPICY ENOUGH

COLLAGEN SOUP POT $24 - LOOKS MORE LIP-SMACKING THAN TONKOTSU MISO

FRIED STINKY TOFU $6

The fried tofus looks like those in Taiwan but not stinky enough though crispy while it is hot. It will feel more authentic if it is served with pickled cabbages on the side. And personally don't like the sauce to be drizzled over, suggest to serve separately as dips instead as not everyone like to have it with sauce.

KOREAN BIG SKEWER $9

Cheese torched on top and the sauce was overpowering (according to my friend)

DRINK MENU

I had Hot Japanese Matcha Tea $3 (refillable) 👍which you can choose between Hot and Cold, the same goes for Yuzu Tea $5.50. My girlfriend has a 'good time' finishing her Mango Passion Fruit Slushies for $5.50 👍. Kind of worth it for the size.

THE DIFFERENT BINGSUS $5.80 ~ $10

I would say Injeolmi Bingsu👍is my favourite because of the pieces of mochi with fine peanut/almond powder on top and the red bean paste right below. The shaved ice was so fine and fluffy without any crusty ice texture. Pulut Hitam 👌was okay and not too sweet when mixed with the shaved ice but still not as good as my favourite.  Didn't try Lychee Bingsu but pretty to look at.

Overall, it wasn't as great as we expected. The price was kind of steep given that the hotpot portion was small and the taste was average with standard ingredients. I think their highlight is Stinky Tofu pot which we did not try. The dessert portion was also too small (like rice bowl size) compared to other Bingsu shops in Singapore. Really, photos can be deceiving so asked their staff about the portion size to avoid disappointment.

Nowadays, we scan the QR code on the table for menu and ordering (sometimes payment too). And even adopting a robotic waiter to serve up some of your orders. Moving towards a futuristic dining experience. Good and bad. Cheers.
