Forever my Big Baby Introduction: The Gentle Shadow On April 19, 2000, a tiny terrapin quietly crawled into my life and changed it forever. I bought her from a little neighborhood shop at my local market, the kind that sold ornamental fish, pet food, and basic aquarium supplies (the shop has long gone) . Back then, I actually brought home two or three baby terrapins. Being so young and not knowing much about pet care, the others sadly didn't survive very long. I still remember the tears I cried back then (not as much as this time) , gently burying one in a small hole I dug downstairs at our HDB block. Completely unaware at the time that digging there wasn't permitted! But through it all, one strong, resilient little soul stayed with me: my Big Baby (my parents called her Gui Gui (乌龟的龟) . In those early days, we really had no idea how to properly raise a terrapin. We simply learned as we went. I started with a small, basic tank, changing her water every single day and feeding h...
Where Aesthetics Meet Coffee: Minimalist Cafes in Singapore to Unwind
In a fast-paced city like Singapore, taking time to slow down isn’t just a luxury. It’s essential. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful lifestyle sanctuary near City Hall or a sleek spot to pause amidst the high-rise energy of Raffles Place, I have picked out five minimalist cafes that offer thoughtfully designed spaces to help you catch your breath, reset, and enjoy a quality brew.
Part 1: The City Hall Sanctuary (Quiet Lifestyle Escapes)
1. Blue Bottle Coffee (Lumine, Raffles City) Address: 252 North Bridge Rd, #01-01 Lumine (Raffles City), Singapore 179103 Nearest MRT: City Hall MRT (EW13/NS25)
The floor-to-ceiling glass paneling floods the seating area with soft natural light
Stepping into Blue Bottle Coffee’s Southeast Asian debut outpost feels like entering a sleek Scandinavian-meets-Japanese coffee sanctuary. The space pairs minimalist warm wood tones with crisp white walls and clean architectural lines. The floor-to-ceiling glass paneling floods the seating area with soft natural light, while the open and low-profile brew bar showcases the precise artistry behind every detail of the drinks.

Ordered a rich and velvety Hot Chocolate that is perfectly comforting without being overly sweet. Along with a slice of light and creamy Lemon Cheesecake with zesty taste, offering a bright, refreshing balance to a mid-day lunch break.
Creamy Cheesecake with a Hot Chocolate
The low-contrast design and serene layout make it a surprisingly calming lunch getaway. Whether for a quiet mid-day reset, solo reflection, or simply enjoying a warm drink while watching the city pass by.
2. Klarra Cafe (Raffles City) Address: 252 North Bridge Rd, #03-10 (Raffles City), Singapore 179103 Nearest MRT: City Hall MRT (EW13/NS25)
A boutique and cafe concept in the bustle of the mall
Tucked inside Klarra’s flagship boutique, it presents a cafe concept of soft minimalism to heart. The aesthetic embraces gentle Japandi-inspired earthy neutrals, textured cream walls and light wood furniture. The seamlessly blurred boundary between fashion boutique and coffee space creates a refined, serene sanctuary elevated high above the bustle of the mall.
A cafe concept of soft minimalism to heart
While on a rush home to my precious tortoise, I stopped for a smooth, rich and comforting Hot Chocolate. Perfect for a quick, warm pick-me-up even when you're short on time. I shall try their Signature Latte with Honey Cream and/or Matcha Latte with Honey Cream (available iced) on my next visit.
What makes them special: Klarra's Signature Honey Cream is made fresh daily using premium Australian honey with no added sugar, giving a natural, velvety richness to the drinks.
A Hot Choc with chocolate shavings on top
Even when you're in a rush, taking a few minutes to pause in this quiet, boutique-framed sanctuary offers a brief, calming reset in the middle of a busy day. It’s an ideal spot for a quick aesthetic takeaway or a peaceful pitstop between errands.
Let me walk you through the above cafes from the following video:
Part 2: The Raffles Place Corridor (Sleek CBD Hideaways)
3. Upshot Specialty Coffee (1 Raffles Place) Address: 1 Raffles Place, #04-31 One Raffles Place, Singapore 048616 Nearest MRT: Raffles Place MRT (NS26/EW14) – Direct building access
Fitted with basic, all-white furnishings
Tucked up on Level 4 of One Raffles Place, Upshot Specialty Coffee takes a strict utilitarian approach to minimalism. A space fitted with basic, all-white furnishings and clean, simple lines. However, it lacks a distinct aesthetic pull and despite being at the higher-floor, it isn't quite as quiet or secluded as you might expect during the workday flow. Probably you can try in the early hours in the morning or mid-afternoon.
A standard, warm cocoa option with simple bakes to grab
I ordered a standard, warm cocoa option, Hot Chocolate. While the taste is fine and easy to drink, it leans simple and stays strictly in comfort-drink territory without much of a "wow" factor. Some basic baked goods like croissants and cruffins are available to grab on the go.
Functioning best as a quick, functional pitstop for office workers on Level 4 rather than an aesthetic sanctuary. It does the job of a simple, no-frills spot to pick up a warm drink in the afternoon. But just don't expect an ultra-quiet or highly photogenic backdrop.
4. Little Glass Stand (CIMB Plaza) Address: 30 Raffles Place, #01-21 CIMB Plaza, Singapore 048622 Nearest MRT: Raffles Place MRT (NS26/EW14)
A compact, Tokyo-inspired coffee concept
Brought to you by the team behind Glass Roasters, Little Glass Stand is a compact, Tokyo-inspired coffee concept (limited seat capacity) right inside CIMB Plaza. True to its name, the clean glass paneling, light wood accents, and an open bar layout emphasizes function, clarity, and precision. It proves that maximum aesthetic charm can be delivered with minimal square footage.
Jivara Milk Choco Matcha with a warm Banana Bread
Ordered Hot Jivara Milk Choco Matcha that is hand-whisked fresh on the spot, this unique pairing blends smooth ceremonial matcha with milk chocolate. It strikes a perfectly balanced, velvety texture that is comforting without being overly bitter (also available iced!). Also along with a warm Banana Bread, it makes for a simple, classic pairing alongside your hot drink. Their bake display keeps things minimal and focused, offering small bites like mini croissants, danish cheese, banana bread, and madeleines.
The art of slow drinks in a fast-paced setting
This spot celebrates the art of slow drinks in a fast-paced setting. Watching the baristas carefully whisk each matcha order creates a surprisingly therapeutic, meditative pause in your morning routine.
5. The Clifford Cafe (Singapore Land Tower) Address: 50 Raffles Pl, #01-01 Singapore Land Tower, Singapore 048623 Nearest MRT: Raffles Place MRT (NS26/EW14)
A sleek and modern space inside a office building
Located inside Singapore Land Tower, The Clifford Cafe offers a sleek, modern space that seamlessly transitions throughout the day. What looks like a standard CBD coffee stop actually packs a huge pleasant surprise. Beyond their coffee menu is a selection of specialty drinks, cocktails, and house-pour wines. It’s an unexpected, versatile spot right in the heart of Raffles Place.
A fantastic CBD deal for just $8.50
This time, I ordered a reliable, classic brew, Cappuccino served hot with smooth foam; a solid pick-me-up for a quiet morning pause. Also a light and airy Plain Croissant, baked to perfection with a deliciously crisp outer shell and a soft, buttery, fluffy center. Not forgetting a Coffee & Pastry Set ($8.50) that is a fantastic CBD deal! Make sure to pair any hot beverage with a pastry to unlock this set price.
Whether for a budget-friendly morning pastry set or winding down after work with a specialty drink, the cafe offers a spacious and polished environment(limited seat capacity) to sit back, catch your breath, and clear your head amidst the high-rise bustle.
Until Next Time!
Taking the time to slow down, sip a good cup of coffee, and appreciate small everyday moments is what keeps me grounded. If you want to see what these cafes look like in motion, be sure to check out my latest video reel for the full visual tour!
