I Saw North Korea from Aegibong Peace Ecopark! | Travelogue

Hello from Aegibong Peace Ecopark!

A photo stop at the entrance

They say some views change your perspective, but the view from Aegibong Peace Ecopark is on a whole different level. Standing right at the border, there is a unique mix of heavy history and stunning modern architecture that you really have to see to believe.

I finally visited this incredible spot where nature meets DMZ, and not only captured the whole experience on videos but on photos too. From the "Zigzag Trail" to Jogang Observation Deck looking out across the water to the North, my to-do-list checked!

The 1.5km zigzag trail to and from Jogang Observatory

At the heart of the Jogang Observatory stands a collection of powerful monuments that serve as silent witnesses to history. The most prominent one will be the North and South Korea Peace Bell. A massive and symbolic structure installed to echo hopes for reunification across the river. Also, the site honors its past as Hill 154, the location where one of the most intense and fiercest battles fought during the Korean War. These monuments not only transform the park to a scenic lookout but also a solemn space for reflection. The modern architecture in the surrounding stands as a reminder of the resilience and the enduring desire for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

A Rare Glimpse Across the Border

Overseeing North Korea, Kaepung-guyok (or Kaepung County)

Standing at the Jogang Observatory, the reality of where you are truly sinks in. Across the water lies Kaepung-guyok (Kaepung County) in North Korea. If you want a closer look, the park provides free telescopes that allow you to peep across the land with a powerful zoom.

While many people assume these border villages are just "for show" or uninhabited, my husband managed to spot several people moving around and actual houses through the telescope. It was a surreal moment that reminded us that life continues on the other side, far beyond what we usually see in the news.

The World’s Closest Starbucks to the North

The Starbucks store nearest to North Korea

I couldn't leave without visiting the Starbucks each time I travel and especially when the store here is known as the nearest branch to North Korea. It was absolutely buzzing with locals and tourists alike on a weekend.

A quick tip for my fellow travellers: While the location is iconic, you actually don't get a very clear view across the border from inside the cafe due to the building's facade. If you want those panoramic views, it's better to stick to the observatory deck.

Of course, a Starbucks visit isn't complete without some exclusive merchandise, right? I couldn't resist picking up some South Korea edition items and that's why a bag of keychains came home with me!

Know Before You Go: Planning Your Visit

If you are planning to add this unique spot to your South Korea itinerary, I highly recommend checking the official website for the latest information on transport and park activities. Click here.

One thing to keep in mind: which a viewer actually pointed out in a comment on my video is that access can change quickly. Because of its location, if tensions rise between the two Koreas, the park or the observatory may close to the public without much notice. You definitely have to "pray hard" that everything stays peaceful and nobody does anything "silly" during your trip so you can experience it all!

In case you missed the premiere on 4 May 2026 at 4pm, fret not. You can watch here or even from my YouTube Channel. Subscribe to my Channel now for the next Korea full-length video coming soon. Cheers!
