Sizzling Satisfaction: My Ultimate Dinner Experience at The Gogi

The Gogi Korean BBQ @ Alexandra Central

The night before our Friday date night at IKEA Alexandra, I Googled dinner spots as per my husband's request. Normally we head to Anchorpoint after shopping at IKEA, but this time, I decided to try the mall next door. I came across a few options, including Japanese and Korean cuisine, but settled on Korean because I was really craving Japchae. I noticed they recommended reservations, but there was no way to book online except by calling in maybe. So we took a chance and see if they’d accept walk-ins. Fortunately, they did! Maybe it was because it was already around 8 pm (hard to believe we spent two hours shopping at IKEA!).

Well-lit and ventilated BBQ restaurant

We decided to skip the BBQ for dinner and just ordered a few dishes to sample. I have to say, even if we had gone for the BBQ, the smoky smell wouldn’t have lingered on us, though the scent of grilled meat definitely tempts you to try it. Oh by the way, they have table service to help with the grilling of your food. And so we went for three dishes, and the staff even mentioned it would be more than enough for us and they were right! We managed to finish everything, not counting the free refillable sides. A very happy tummy!

Free refillable side dishes that were so appetizing

Spicy Stir-fried Octopus $40

When it came to choosing between squid and octopus, we opted for the latter. However, we were a bit surprised by how little octopus there was for the price. I get that octopus can be on the pricier side, but it should feel worth it, right? Honestly, we ended up tasting more vegetables than octopus. The one redeeming factor was the rich, spicy flavor (it wasn’t too fiery), just the right kick. And those big beansprouts? Absolutely delicious and crunchy!

Bibimbap $20

The story dates back a few years, on a flight from Osaka to Singapore with Korean Air. It was on that flight that my husband had his first taste of Bibimbap. He noticed other passengers enjoying the same dish, which is essentially just a mix of everything on your plate. From that moment, he was hooked. He still remembers adding anchovies to his rice, though they weren't part of the dish on the menu at The Gogi. Thankfully, the refillable sides included anchovies, which solved his dilemma. He loved it, and I personally thought it made for a perfectly balanced meal.

Japchae $28

First off, I’m a huge fan of noodles, any kind, any style, way more than rice. So when I first tried this dish, I was immediately hooked. It was juicy, packed with flavor, and loaded with vegetables, which made me feel a little less guilty about the carbs. I actually brought back some glass noodles from Korea about 10 years ago and tried cooking them at home, but it didn’t turn out great. We struggled to get them soft enough before stir-frying. Now, I’ve accepted that sometimes it’s worth just paying for a good dish outside: saves me the trouble, prevents food waste, and satisfies my craving!

Alexandra Central beside Momentus Hotel Alexandra

If you're craving Korean food or looking for a spot to grab lunch or dinner after a shopping trip at IKEA, The Gogi is located at Alexandra Central Level 2, right next to Momentus Hotel Alexandra, on the same stretch as IKEA. However, keep in mind that while you'll find some food options at Alexandra Central, the shopping options are pretty limited. If you're in the mood for more retail therapy, head across the road to Queensway Shopping Centre.
