A Chinese New Year Birthday Dinner at Yum Cha Chinatown

We made our way to Chinatown to soak in the upcoming Chinese New Year vibes while celebrating our friend’s birthday with dinner. We were meant to go to a café, but it turned out to be closed—the article my friend found was from 2020. After wandering around for a last-minute option, we ended up at Yum Cha, which turned out to be a great choice since it was a light and shareable meal. The moment we sat down and ordered, the crowd began to flow in. It was dinner time during the upcoming Chinese New Year, so many companies were out for a 收工飯 o r a celebratory meal for the new working year. As a result, the restaurant got pretty noisy, with conversations buzzing from every table. Loved this preserved cucumbers to the fullest X.O Fried Carrot Cake with Shrimp I’ve loved this dish for as long as I can remember, especially because the thicker pieces of carrot cake add extra texture. Instead of frying the eggs with the carrot cake, they’re added as a garnish on top. Paired with some fresh praw...

Crystal Jade Hong Kong Kitchen | Food Review

I'm too lazy to look back at the food reviews I wrote for the past decade so decided to include this Chinese restaurant in my list, just in case I have never done so yet. A common brand for Chinese Cuisine and we love their food no doubt. Been to the same restaurant, same location multiple times and never got sick of it. Price a little steep but still worth it once awhile with their good quality of food in the restaurant.

XO SAUCE CARROT CAKE ✅️

I loved fried carrot cakes and I never knew I loved fried carrot cake in big pieces with lots of eggs and beansprouts. Plus this one here strikes a balance between moist and dry. It changed my POV for other carrot cakes out there since the first time. This is definitely the right one for me for black carrot cake. Oh by the way, I'm Team White and Black Carrot Cake. Anyone same as me?

CHILLI OIL DUMPLINGS

Used to like it but somehow this time, the chili oil tasted so different. A conflicting taste, little more spicy than ever and piercing through my taste bud. I might not order again the next time, though the dumplings were good. They have other options for fresh, big prawns.

SHRIMP WONTONS NOODLES SOUP ✅️

Mister's favourite because of the thin and springy noodles like Hong Kong 细蓉面, fresh shrimp wonton and the flavourful soup that was light, fresh and sweet. This noodles soup also changed Mister's POV on wonton noodles out there.

SIEW MAI AND HAR KOW

Both of them won our hearts with their fresh, big prawns wrapped within. And the Siew Mai was quite big so I thought it was worth it, especially with the popping of fish roe in your mouth. Come early for their dim sum spread. We were lucky to get their last order.

XIAO LONG BAO

It was like a must order when you see it in the menu of Chinese restaurants. I'm particular with the skin because I have experienced different thickness in other Chinese restaurant and same brand, different outlets, different thickness. The ones here were just right and juicy.

THREE COMBINATIONS 三拼

Ordered Roasted Meat, Char Siew and Roasted Duck. Concluded that we loved their Roasted Meat ✅️ and will order again the next visit. The crispiness of the skin and the texture hit the spot. Hopefully it maintains this way throughout. The Char Siew lacked the half fats half lean meat texture. Trust me. This texture is the best and neither dry nor hard. And the Roasted Duck was normal.

Many people will follow the crowd for over-rated Chinese restaurants but for us, this is our place for Chinese cuisine. Every restaurant has their areas of improvement and nothing is perfect even if they get Michelin Star. Just different taste bud, different POVs.
