The Hainan Story | Food Review

Have always make effort to let my folks try different cuisines from restaurants. Either takeaway or dine-in (mostly the former due to the pandemic). This time round, celebrating my Dad's birthday one day in advance on April Fool's Day. No jokes ya. I ordered food delivery directly from The Hainan Story instead of delivery platform. For a lunch feast at the comfort of my childhood home. And they can have it for dinner by heating up if there are leftovers. Shall need no cooking for the day and just enjoy.

Sliced Fish with Century Egg Pumpkin Porridge 👍

I thought I was shortchanged with sliced fish but actually inside the pumpkin porridge. Mixed it well so that you taste all in one mouthful. Overall, it brought out the sweetness from pumpkin and smooth texture. What is porridge without dough fritters, right? Comes with the set.

But my dad intends to dip e dough fritter with black coffee for his tea time. Not a bad idea, right?

Prawn Fritter Set 👌

Comes with steamed rice, prawn crackers and sambal belachan to spice things up! I loved the prawn fritter that was nice and fresh. The batter wasn't thick. Simple vegetables, spotted some tempeh and a slice of long bean omelette. Make me wanna cook my own at home too. The prawn cracker wasn't crispy anymore when it reaches us. Sad. Anyway, this set would be for the folks' dinner.

1980's Traditional Hainanese Pork Cutlet 👌

Comes with Japanese Cucumber, Cherry Tomatoes and Baked Beans as sides and to drizzle with Hainanese Barbecue Sauce. We actually dipped it instead because not all of us wanted it to be drenched in the sauce. Get a taste on its own before deciding to spice it up with condiments.

We cut up the cutlet in small bite size. It was cold already by the time we had our lunch and the texture was kind of dense but still acceptable for us. Dipping in the sauce helped in reducing the denseness. But I liked the crispy layer thou.

Claypot Hainanese Curry Vegetables served with Rice 👍

My folks really were rice person unlike me being a noodles person. They shared the rice and it was all finished up. Thanks to this savoury curry veggie (that consists long beans, cabbages, black fungus and so on). Appetizing with so much flavour. The curry was rich and spicy at the perfect tone. I even dipped my pork cutlet in it. Taste like scissor cut curry rice style.

My dad even wanna use the curry to cook noodles. If too spicy, just dilute with water. It really runs in the blood for max out the use of food resources to whip up another dish or meal.

Nanyang Yam Orh Nee Roll 👍

That yam paste was thick and you really taste the real deal plus striking a good ratio of the yam paste and sponge cake. Even my mum said the texture was good and not dry too (the sponge cake). Kept in the fridge for best experience. I love it cold because the paste would taste like yam ice cream. Or ice cream cake feel. What's more, it wasn't very sweet. On point.

Their food actually passed our taste test. Probably the next time visit their physical shop to try other stuff in their menu. Like satays, kuay chup especially the pork belly set and salt bake chicken. And probably grab their rum and raisin butter cake or kopi guyou cake (coffee and butter cake).

Anyone tried their food yet? What's your verdict? Share share with me. Cheers!
